Becca Merritt needs help. Her younger brother and only remaining family is missing, having left her a cryptic message that leads her to a tattoo parlor called Hard Ink and Nick Rixey, a former member of her late father’s Special Forces team. Unbeknownst to Becca, Nick holds hard feelings toward her father and dismisses her request for assistance out of hand. However, when Nick realizes that there really is something going on and that Becca is in danger, his Special Forces training and protective instincts kick in, no matter what her father did. As the situation reaches crisis proportions, Nick and Becca must trust each other and the passions growing between them. When Becca learns that her father’s betrayal is behind the current danger, Nick and Becca’s budding relationship is tested.
Verdict The “Hard Ink” series starts off with lots of tension as the background of Hard Ink Tattoo adds a unique and different mood to the story. Kaye (Hearts in Darkness) introduces us to a host of characters, from Jeremy Rixey, Nick’s brother and owner of Hard Ink, to the rest of the Special Forces team, all of whom will make excellent leading men in upcoming volumes. Book two, Hard As You Can, will be released in March 2014.—Lisa Jordan, Gardner Neighborhood Lib., Johnson Cty. Lib., KS
