Christian Fiction Reviews | April 15, 2013

The motto of CF publishers this season seems to be “all series, all the time.” Ellechor Publishing, Zondervan, Thomas Nelson, Revell, and Tyndale are all launching new series this spring. The upward swing in Amish fiction also continues. This genre appeals to fans of simple stories that are clean and promise a satisfying ending. Do you have readers who enjoy character-driven stories, even pacing, and a little bit of humor in a small-town setting? If your patrons like such authors as Elizabeth Bevarly and Ann Ross, then bonnet fiction will be right up their alley.

Warren, Susan May. Take a Chance on Me. Tyndale House. (Christiansen Family, Bk. 1). Apr. 2013. 416p. ISBN 9781414378411. pap. $13.99; ebk. ISBN 9781414386010. CF

Widower Darek Christiansen is not pleased when he has to fill in for his brother at a bachelor auction. But love blooms after Ivy Madison, the new assistant county attorney, places the winning bid. Unfortunately their relationship is threatened by Ivy having arranged a plea bargain three years ago for Jenson Atwood, the man considered responsible for the death of Darek’s wife. VERDICT Warren’s (“Deep Haven” series) new series launch has it all: romance, suspense, and intrigue. It is sure to please her many fans and win her new readers, especially those who enjoy Terri Blackstock.

Wiehl, Lis with April Henry. A Matter of Trust. Thomas Nelson. (Mia Quinn Mysteries, Bk. 1). 2013. 320p. ISBN 9781595549037. $26.99; ebk. ISBN 9781401688196. CF

Legal prosecutor Mia Quinn is having a hard time. Her husband recently passed away, leaving her with a mound of bills and two children. The last thing she needs is involvement in a murder investigation, but she doesn’t have much choice, particularly when the victim is her best friend, Colleen. (Not to mention that Mia was on the phone with Colleen when she was shot.) Mia teams up with Det. Charlie Carlson to investigate the case. The deeper the duo digs, the more Mia realizes that she may be the killer’s next target. VERDICT With the assistance of best-selling mystery author Henry, former federal prosecutor and Fox News commentator Wiehl (“Triple Threat” series) launches an intense series debut. Full of raw emotion, believable characters, and plot twists, this legal thriller is a clear choice for Wiehl’s fans and for readers who enjoy Oliver North’s fiction.
