Library Journal Reviews starred reviewLaPlante, Lynda. Prime Suspect #1. 7 CDs. library ed. unabridged. 8 hrs. AudioGo. 2012. ISBN 9780792787280. $29.95; digital download. MYS

It’s not your average police procedural when Scotland Yard’s Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison shows up to solve a murder. DCI Tennison battles not only the clock to catch a murderer of women but also the sexist attitudes of the male police personnel. She is a fully developed character whose attitudes resonate with the reader, and LaPlante’s plot is great. Davina Porter’s narration is near perfection in every aspect, from her accents to her masterly use of inflection; she makes listening a real pleasure. Note that LaPlante’s teleplay, made famous in the UK by Dame Helen Mirren, won an Edgar Award, which may generate additional interest. VERDICT This thoroughly enjoyable mystery is highly recommended.—Scott R. DiMarco, Mansfield Univ. of Pennsylvania

Library Journal Reviews starred reviewSchofield, Michael. January First: A Child’s Descent into Madness and Her Father’s Struggle To Save Her. 7 CDs. library ed. unabridged. 8½ hrs. Tantor Audio. 2012. ISBN 9781452634791. $71.99; 1 MP3-CD. library/retail eds.; Playaway digital; digital download. MEMOIR

This is Schofield’s account of dealing with his very young and deeply troubled daughter, Janni, who is a sweet genius—when she is not being “evil” and uncontrollably violent. Physically lashing out at her parents and determined to harm her newborn brother, Janni has an unusually high tolerance for antipsychotic medications and ultimately begs to be taken back to the psychiatric ward and left there. She also is only five years old. The narrative is compelling and fast-paced, leaving the reader anxious to learn Janni’s fate. The audio production is very well performed by narrator Fred Patrick Lawlor, who does an amazing job of conveying emotion and uncertainty. VERDICT Readers with an affinity for memoirs and those interested in children’s mental illness as portrayed in literature will appreciate this work. [“The anxiety, frustration, and loss Schofield and his wife experience are palpable, so much so that the author’s tone is, at times, grating. Still, their heart-wrenching story—featured on 20/20 and Oprah—is bound to move parents and caregivers of children with similar psychiatric disorders,” read the review of the Crown hc, LJ 6/15/12.—Ed.]—Nicole A. Cooke, Univ. of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

Library Journal Reviews starred reviewStewart, Rod. Rod: The Autobiography. 10 CDs. retail ed. unabridged. 13 hrs. Random Audio. 2012. ISBN 9780449011270. $40; 10 CDs. library ed.; Playaway digital; digital download. MEMOIR/MUSIC

Rock legend Stewart traces his five-decade career from being the lead singer in the Jeff Beck Band and the group Faces through his highly successful solo years. Stewart is candid and humorous as he discusses his music, wild days on the road with his band, amusing anecdotes about his great friendship with Elton John, and a seemingly endless list of affairs and marriages with tall leggy blondes (all together he has been married three times and has eight children). Digressions along the way delve into his passion for cars, model railroads, and his most identifiable asset—his hair. Simon Vance expertly captures the man. VERDICT Stewart’s legions of lifelong followers and fans of rock ’n’ roll musician tell-alls will enjoy this amusing behind-the-scenes romp with “Rod the Mod.”—Phillip Oliver, Univ. of North Alabama, Florence
