High school football is a very popular spectator sport. However, as more games are being televised on local cable TV and high-profile teams play to national audiences on ESPN, what is the effect on young footballers? Each season players die of heatstroke, and there is increasing evidence of traumatic brain injury in players, even those who have not suffered concussions. Yet team success and the resultant college football scholarships are viewed as the means for these youngsters to rise above poverty and gain an education and possibly an NFL spot. This documentary (originally aired on PBS’s Frontline) offers a balanced assessment of the increasing number of football in juries among high school athletes as bigger, faster, stronger players hit one another with increasing force. Yet who would deny these young players their shot at local fame, perhaps a scholarship, or a professional football career? VERDICT Essential viewing for players, parents, and fans.‚ Cliff Glaviano, formerly with Bowling Green State Univ. Libs., OH

This is a brash, hilarious, and poignant look at what happens when the creed of no rules and no responsibility meets the demands of parenthood. In this collection of interviews with rocker dads like Jim Lindberg (Pennywise), Mark Hoppus (Blink-182), Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), and Art Alexakis (Everclear), these sometimes hapless fathers discover that nothing in the punk rock ethos prepares you for being a dad. Most of the men had either difficult or nonexistent relationships with their own fathers, and the most touching moments come in the interactions with their children as they struggle with this new role. How do you go from rebelling against authority to becoming authority? Ultimately, these men decide that they can change the world by becoming better parents. Bonus features include performances from Alexakis and Tim McIlrath (Rise Against). VERDICT Fans of punk rock and anyone who ever thought we’re not changing before they became parents and then realized it changes everything will be entertained.‚ Bill Baars, Lake Oswego P.L., OR
