Titles this month are about the drama swirling around the time-tested boy-meets-girl story line. Is there a bit of romance? Maybe. Sex? Absolutely.
Shhhhh! Wanna know a secret? Many characters in this month’s selections guard their privacy whether it’s because of shady business buried in their past or plunging into a marital affair. The gossip-worthy secrets may threaten a life or cause inner guilt, but they certainly add spice to this month’s novels by established African American authors.
Several family members play a part in this month’s selections, and they may alternate being loving, dysfunctional, or ultimately loyal. Sometimes they mean well but stick their noses into the protagonists’ romantic plans. Other times they can be a pain—deadbeat dads and eager-to-give-free-advice aunts and uncles—that won’t go away. No matter what, it’s good to know somebody you grew up with has your back.
