ALA Buzz Books, Pt. 2 | ALA Annual 2016

Exhibitors at this summer’s annual American Library Association (ALA) conference had lots of books for the taking—ALA means never having enough book bags—and as I pointed out last week, many scallytitles that buzzed at BookExpo America (BEA) also buzzed at ALA. We see the same this week, as more publishers reveal their in-demand titles. Sourcebooks continued the hit parade with Marie Benedict’s The Other Einstein and Craig Carlson’s Pancakes in Paris; Grove Atlantic with Robert Olen Butler’s Perfume River; Simon & Schuster with Alice Hoffman’s Faithful; and Perseus Books Groups with John Bradshaw & Sarah Ellis’s The Trainable Cat and John Simpson’s The Word Detective, among other big nonfiction titles. But some juicy new titles surfaced as well.

While it made sense that Pulitzer Prize winner Butler’s study of the consequences of war drew attention, other quickly vanishing titles at the Grove Atlantic booth included Tim Murphy’s Christodora, about New York City from the AIDS-scarred 1980s to over-the-top rich 2020s, as seen through events surroudning one East Village building; Molly Brodak’s Bandit: A Daughter’s Memoir, the award-winning poet’s account of her bank robber father; and Thomas Perry’s Old Man, a new thriller from the Edgar Award winner starring an army intelligence agent who’s been on the run for 35 years.

Hot titles from Simon & Schuster included two fiction titles: Colleen Hoover’s new-love-or-old-love It Ends with Us and debut author Armando Lucas Correa’s The German Girl, limning the consequences of the infamous voyage of the St. Louis as it tried to deliver Jewish refugees to safety in 1939. But some intriguing nonfiction titles popped here, among them Tilar Mazzeo Irena’s Children: The Extraordinary Story of the Woman Who Saved 2,500 Children from the Warsaw Ghetto, about a Polish social worker’s remarkable efforts during and after the war; Alejandro Danois’s The Boys of Dunbar: A Story of Love, Hope, and Basketball, about a hardscrabble high school basketball team in 1980s Baltimore that triumphantly produced four NBA players; and Jesmyn Ward’s The Fire This Time: A New Generation Speaks About Race, with the National Book Award winner collecting essays that leap from James Baldwin’s 1962 “Letter to My Nephew” to reassess America on race today.

More hot S. & S. nonfiction: Jennifer Weiner’s memoir, A Hungry Heart, with often funny moments that have fueled her writing; and Paul Brinkley-Rogers’s Please Enjoy Your Happiness: A Memoir, the Pulitzer Prize–winning war correspondent’s recall of a still reverberant affair with an older Japanese woman in 1959.

Consortium fielded six booths with ten publishers, plus a combined display, which made for lots of activity. Sought-after books included Bernice McFadden’s The Book of Harlan (Akashic), about two African American musicians imprisoned at the Buchenwald concentration camp, so eye-opening that people came up hours before and days after the one-time giveaway begging for copies. All copies of Ursula Le Guin’s Words Are My Matter: Writings About Life and Books, 2000–2015, with a Journal of a Writer’s Week (Small Beer) disappeared five minutes after they were put out (desperate folks even offered money).

Other big Consortium titles included Rebecca Solnit’s Hope in the Dark: Untold Histories, Wild Possibilities (Haymarket), a revised edition of her important 2004 book; Meredith Tax’s A Road Unforeseen: Women Fight the Islamic State (Bellevue Literary), with reportedly “super” high demand; Rabbi Ben Kamin’s I Don’t Know What To Believe (Central Recovery Press), which had the press’s busiest signing on record; Christine Moore’s Little Flower Baking (Prospect Park), where the giveaways were actually salted caramels made by the author; and Kate Greenaway Medal winner William Grill’s The Wolves of Currumpaw (Flying Eye), an illustrated retelling of Ernest Thompson Seton’s epic wilderness drama Lobo, the King of Currumpaw, originally published in 1898, that should appeal to the child-at-heart of all ages.

Among forthcoming books distributed in galley format by Perseus Books Group, Tyler Nordgren’s Sun Moon Earth: The History of Solar Eclipses from Omens of Doom to Einstein and Exoplanets, Laurie Hess’s Unlikely Companions: The Adventures of an Exotic Animal Doctor (or, What Friends Feathered, Furred, and Scaled Have Taught Me about Life and Love), and Cait Murphy’s A History of American Sports in 100 Objects stood out. But Perseus had many recently published titles available as well, including paperback editions of successful hardcovers.

People helped themselves to self-help and personal-interest titles like Jes Baker’s Things No One Will Tell Fat Girls: A Handbook for Unapologetic Living (Seal), Glade B. Curtis & Judith Schuler’s Your Pregnancy Week by Week, 8th ed. (Da Capo Lifelong), Sheila Hamilton’s All the Things We Never Knew: Chasing the Chaos of Mental Illness (Seal), Melissa Milne’s The Naughty Diet: The 10-Step Plan to Eat and Cheat Your Way to the Body You Want (Da Capo Lifelong), and Andy Steve’s Andy Steves’ Europe: City-Hopping on a Budget (Avalon). Titles like Thomas E. Mann & Norman J. Ornstein’s It’s Even Worse Than It Looks: How the American Constitutional System Collided with the New Politics of Extremism, rev. ed. (Basic) proved weightier, but Irena Brignull’s The Hawkweed Prophecy (Weinstein), YA fantasy with crossover appeal, is just plain fun.
