Eric Kaplan is a co-executive producer of and writer for the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory. Previously, he wrote for Late Show with David Letterman, The Simpsons, Malcolm in the Middle, Futurama, and Flight of the Conchords. His book, Does Santa Exist?: A Philosophical Investigation, is a deeply insightful, laugh-out-loud exploration.

Excerpts from the audio interview:

Q: Where did the idea for this book originate?

A: My five-year-old son was going to be on a playdate at the zoo in December. The other child’s mother said she wanted to cancel because ‘there will be reindeer and I don’t want your son’s skepticism about Santa to infect my son’s faith in Santa.’ So I decided to investigate the question.

Q: Where do you come out philosophically on the issue? (no spoilers, please!)

A: I think that there is a wonderful, infinite, limitless reality – and then there’s us. And we have the job and the opportunity to figure out a way to deal with that. … I want there to be a giant love-fest as a result of my book; for people to take a metaphysical chill-pill and explore the reasons and the beauty in each other’s approach to life.
