Jacob Maymudes is a writer, director and visual effects supervisor in Los Angeles. His father, Victor Maymudes, was Bob Dylan’s tour manager at the beginning of Dylan’s musical career in the early 1960s, and again from 1986 to 1996. In 2001, after recording more than twenty-four hours of taped memories in preparation for writing the book Another Side of Bob Dylan, Victor died. Jacob wrote the book, using the tapes to shape the story.

Excerpts from the audio interview:

Q: Why did you use the title of Dylan’s album for your book?

A: That album was written in Greece, where Dylan and my father were vacationing together. It was done almost entirely in the company of my father, and was such an important part of their relationship. For me, the title really refers to the perspective that a friend has of Bob Dylan.

Q: Why is that album, now a half-century old, still relevant?

A: What I find intriguing is the impact Dylan had with his music. Fifty years ago, Bob was the voice of a generation. There are so many issues today that have direct parallels with what was happening then: women’s rights, religious freedom, segregation. And that’s what inspired him.
