Tantorious is a monthly podcast series featuring interviews with well-known authors, hosted by Allan Hoving and presented by Tantor Audio.
Raun K. Kaufman was diagnosed with severe autism as a child. His story of recovery and his work has been widely covered in the media and in his own seminars and lectures. The former CEO of the Autism Treatment Center of America, where he now serves as director of global education, Raun is the author of the book Autism Breakthrough, a step-by-step guide for parents and educators who want to learn the method that helped him and thousands of others. He also narrates the audio edition.
Excerpts from the audio interview:
Q: What was the treatment that worked for you?
A: My parents originally developed what they called the Son-Rise Program just to reach me and help me, and now it’s been used in over 80 different countries. The treatment has two wonderful attributes: one, it’s extremely effective; and two, it comes at autism from a completely different vantage point: rather than trying to force these children to conform to a world that they don’t yet understand, this program focuses on joining children in their own world first.
Q: How exactly is that done?
A: The book is a step-by-step manual on how to do it. The underpinning is, the children show us the way in, and then we show them the way out. When we join them in their repetitive behaviors, they become more interested in and connected with us. Then we use their willing engagement to teach them totally new skills. It’s completely opposite conventional treatments, and a new way forward.
