americanah060214 Fiction by Adichie, Carr & Nonfiction About Big Pharma & World War I | Audiobook ReviewsAdichie’s (The Thing Around Your Neck) remarkable novel is partly an immigrant experience narrative, partly pointed social commentary, and partly a love story. Ifemelu and Obinze fell in love as teenagers in 1990s Lagos, Nigeria, when the country was under military dictatorship. Ifemelu immigrates to the United States, while Obinze gets a tourist visa to England but cannot attain permanent status and is discovered and deported. Meanwhile, Ifemelu completes college in Philadelphia and writes an extremely successful blog called “Raceteenth; or Various Observations About American Blacks by a Non-American Black.” Back home, Obinze becomes part of the upper middle class in oil-rich Nigeria, with a wife, a child, and a big house. After 15 years in the States, Ifemelu returns to Nigeria, where the couple reunite and must determine if their passion has endured the years of separation. Adjoa Andoh’s narration is superb. Every character is clearly and distinctly voiced. The African-accented English is crystal clear. The American characters—Andoh’s interpretation of Ifemelu’s observations—are deliciously caricatured. VERDICT This may well be the best narration of the year. [“Witty, wry, and observant, Adichie is a marvelous storyteller who writes passionately about the difficulty of assimilation and the love that binds a man, a woman, and their homeland,” read the starred review of the Knopf hc, LJ 5/1/13.]—Nann Blaine Hilyard, formerly with Zion-Benton P.L., IL

fourfriends060214 Fiction by Adichie, Carr & Nonfiction About Big Pharma & World War I | Audiobook ReviewsCarr’s (“Thunder Point” series) engaging story is rooted in believable drama—the tale of four friends each dealing with romantic relationships in varying stages of crisis—and all supporting one another. Therese Plummer’s narration is spot-on; the voice of Gerri is perfectly selected, with a resonance critical for such a stalwart character. Supporting female characters each have appropriate distinguishing timbres, from Sonja’s quirky wit to B.J.’s quiet locution. Male voices, while less dynamic, are easily distinguishable, and production lapses are few. Best of all, readers will be riveted as they find themselves invested in the fates of the protagonists, perhaps lauding the courage of some characters while cursing the forbearance and tolerance of others and finally breathing a sigh of relief as all ends well for this circle of four friends. VERDICT Recommended for all fans of general fiction. [“The fast-paced prose, strong female characterizations, and multiple third-person points of view keep the action moving,” read the review of the Mira: Harlequin pb, LJ 4/1/14; see Q&A with Carr.]—Erin E. Forson, Columbus, OH

Covering from the last of the doughboys to the Christmas Truce of 1914, this compilation is a must for fans of military history. Werth returns to Vertex, the molecular pharmaceutical start-up he first profiled in The Billion Dollar Molecule. Founded by Joshua Boger, a Merck Pharmaceutical researcher disgusted by big-business, profit-first research policies, Vertex was created to follow a different paradigm: patient-centered drug development. This book is a description of the more than 20 years of endless fundraising, deal-making, and back-breaking research behind the 2011 introduction of Vertex’s first successful drug, a hepatitis C treatment. It combines a fascinating look at the exploration and regulatory pitfalls of drug development with the sad tale of the company’s evolution into a business a lot like the pharmaceutical giants its founding researchers originally rejected. The scientific explanations are clear, accurate, and jargon-free, a rare combination in a popular science book. Sean Pratt’s excellent reading makes the material highly accessible even to a casual listener. Verdict For all listeners interested in the molecular biology behind or the business of modern medicine.—I. Pour-El, Des Moines Area Community Coll., Boone, IA
