Tantorious is a monthly podcast series featuring interviews with well-known authors, hosted by Allan Hoving and presented by Tantor Audio.
W. Bruce Cameron is a nationally syndicated columnist and bestselling author whose books have been adapted for TV and movies. His latest novels, A Dog’s Purpose and A Dog’s Journey, were both New York Times bestsellers. His new book, The Dogs of Christmas, is a charming and heartwarming holiday tale that explores the power of love, trust, and a basket full of puppies.
Excerpts from the audio interview:
Q: What is The Dogs of Christmas about? [laughs] No spoilers, please!
A: It’s about a man who finds himself oddly isolated. His girlfriend has left him, and he lives in a remote cabin he inherited from his parents. Then his neighbor dumps a pregnant dog on him, and pregnant dogs generally lead to puppies. It’s heartwarming but also a page-turner.
Q: It’s been called “a book about dog lovers by an author who understands the canine soul.” What is the canine soul, and how did you come to understand it?
A: Gradually, I have become the dog-book guy. And that’s great because these animals are always full of joy and optimism. The soul of a dog is this wonderful place where it’s always happy all the time. They’re here for such a short time yet they manage to have joy every single moment of every single day. I have discovered that living your life like the dogs can be one of the greatest things we can do as people.
