Lawrence in Arabia: War, Deceit, Imperial Folly and the Making of the Modern Middle East. 19 CDs. library ed. unabridged. 23 hrs. Blackstone Audio. 2013. ISBN 9781482939965. $34.95. 19 CDs. retail ed.; 2 MP3-CDs. retail ed.; digital download. MEMOIR

Anderson’s (The Man Who Tried To Save the World) fun and informative popular history chronicles T.E. Lawrence’s experiences in Arabia before, during, and immediately after World War I. Similar in style and quality to Erik Larson’s Devil in the White City, this work tells as well the stories of three other spies: a Palestinian Zionist, a German agitator, and an American oil company employee. Their tales weave in and out of Lawrence’s narrative and are also used to show what was happening in other areas of the Ottoman front of the war. Anderson takes a grounded middle view of Lawrence, staying away from the more sensational theories others have presented, making sure to differentiate between what is known and what is merely supposed. Lawrence’s tale includes extensive political and military conflict related clearly and excitingly and illustrates how a “sideshow of a sideshow” has so affected the politics of the Middle East and, through it, the world. Malcom Hilgartner’s clear reading allows the well-paced writing to deliver an engrossing experience. VERDICT Highly recommended for public libraries and readers who like war history or popular history. [“With strong and insightful writing, using T.E. Lawrence as a window onto the tragic history of World War I and its settlement in the Middle East, Anderson makes this complicated history both vivid and engaging,” read the starred review of the Doubleday hc, LJ 6/15/13.]—Tristan M. OrangeReviewStar Audio Reviews | November 15, 2013 Ewan, Chris. The Good Thief’s Guide to Berlin. (Good Thief’s Guide, Bk. 5). 7 CDs. library ed. unabridged. 8½ hrs. AudioGO. 2013. ISBN 9780792796381. $64.95; Playaway digital. F

Ewan’s (The Good Thief’s Guide to Venice) latest may be the best in the series owing to the cleverness of the convoluted plot and the expert blending of suspense and humor. The British embassy in Berlin asks crime novelist/burglar Charlie Howard to find an item of considerable import without telling him exactly what he is looking for. While many listeners, especially those familiar with Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps, will figure out the key to the mystery long before the hero, Charlie’s obtuseness, recalling that of P.G. Wodehouse’s Bertie Wooster, is part of the fun. As always, the masterly Simon Vance excels at demonstrating both Charlie’s deductive skills and his occasional confusion, and Vance’s interpretation of an unusual character named Buster is especially delightful. VERDICT Recommended for both fans of the series and those who enjoy witty comic mysteries.—Michael Adams, CUNY Graduate Ctr. Lib., New York

OrangeReviewStar Audio Reviews | November 15, 2013 Black, Holly. The Coldest Girl in Coldtown. 11 CDs. retail ed. unabridged. 12 hrs. Hachette Audio. 2013. ISBN 9781478924692. $25; Playaway digital; digital download. F

Not long ago, the world discovered that vampires were real. Now many live in quarantined Coldtowns, walled-off cities where vampires roam free and humans flock to offer blood to prove their worthiness for eternal life. Pulled by the allure of the televised decadence, the lavish soirees, and the romantic sensibilities, people enter Coldtown, but few ever leave. Tana wakes after a dusk-to-dawn party to find that only she and her infected ex-boyfriend are alive— for now. Impetuous and empathetic, Tana frees a mysterious chained vampire and all three run from the remaining monsters to the nearest Coldtown. Tana must decide whom she can trust if she is ever going to go home. Black (The Spiderwick Chronicles) perfectly blends classic vampire lore with more than a few new twists. Narrator Christine Lakin expertly relates the tale of Tana, who struggles to survive without losing herself. VERDICT Young adult and adult devotees of vampire and urban fantasy will discover more than enough to sate their voracious appetites with this world of opulence, ancient social hierarchies, and reality television feeds in this essential purchase.—Lisa Youngblood, Harker Heights P.L., TX
