Tantor Audio. 2013. ISBN 9781452613017. $34.99; 1 MP3-CD. library/retail eds.; Playaway digital; digital download. MEMOIR

Hainey was a young boy when his newspaperman father died suddenly. His stoic mother refuses to talk about the death, and Hainey’s secret perusal of his father’s obituaries leads him to believe there is more to the story than he has been told. Hainey follows his father’s journalism footsteps, and as an adult he uses his reporter’s skills finally to get to the bottom of the story that has defined his life. This compelling memoir is read by Dan John Miller, whose voices, pacing, and talent for conveying nuance and emotion bring Hainey’s text to life. VERDICT Hainey deftly weaves family history and personal memory into his quest for the truth about his father, creating for the reader an incredible and captivating story. Highly recommended. [“Readers may intuit quickly what happened the night of Hainey’s father’s death, but the portrait of the bygone world of the Chicago newspaper industry and the slow unraveling of the puzzle surrounding Bob Hainey’s life, rather than his death, will keep readers interested beyond that point,” read the review of the Scribner hc, LJ Xpress Reviews, 3/21/13.]—Amy Koester, St. Charles City-Cty. OrangeReviewStar Audio Reviews | October 15, 2013 Palin, Michael. Brazil. 8 CDs. library ed. unabridged. 10 hrs. AudioGO. 2013. ISBN 9781624600784. $29.95; digital download. TRAV

Palin (Himalaya) is on the road again, this time to Brazil. Over a trip lasting 75 days he covers the country’s history, art, geography, politics, flora, fauna, and anything else that strikes his fancy. Along the way he talks to an array of people as he describes adventures that include participating in Rio’s Gay Pride Parade; meeting a five-legged cow named Surprise; visiting a German enclave complete with beer and lederhosen; and interviewing a former president. Palin’s observations are warm, witty, and insightful, while his self-deprecating humor illustrates just how and why his travelogs are so successful. It’s impossible to imagine anyone except Palin telling his own story and he does it to perfection. VERDICT Even those with just a smidgen of interest in Brazil will be captivated by Palin’s special style and delivery. [“The book’s upbeat style will appeal to audiences who have enjoyed travel writings such as Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations and J. Maarten Troost’s Lost on Planet China and The Sex Lives of Cannibals,” read the review of the Thomas Dunne: St. Martin’s hc, LJ 8/13.]—Susan G. Baird, formerly with Oak Lawn P.L., IL

light Audio Reviews | October 15, 2013Bohjalian, Chris. The Light in the Ruins. 9 CDs. library ed. unabridged. 11½ hrs. Books on Tape. 2013. ISBN 9780307917430. $35; 1 MP3-CD. retail ed. Random Audio. Playaway digital; digital download. F

Bohjalian (The Sandcastle Girls) sets his latest novel in World War II Italy. The grounds of the strategically located villa of the Rosatis hold Etruscan treasures of interest to the Nazis. The family is caught in a no-win situation in 1943 that will have implications in 1955, as the survivors are tracked down and gruesomely murdered. The author weaves a strong cast into two vividly told situations that Serafina Bettini, a Florentine police investigator, must deal with, along with her personal history as a World War II partisan. Reader Cassandra Campbell handles the various accents with skill, and Mark Bramhall uses haunting menace as the revenge-driven killer. verdict Highly recommended for fiction listeners. [“Thoroughly gripping, beautiful, and astonishingly vengeful, this novel is a heartbreaker. Bohjalian’s latest turn to historical fiction is immensely rewarding,” read the review of the Doubleday hc, LJ 5/15/13.]—Joyce Kessel, Villa Maria Coll., Buffalo
