OrangeReviewStar Audio Revews | August 2013Guthrie, A.B. The Way West. 10 CDs. library ed. unabridged. 12 hrs. Dreamscape Audio. 2013. ISBN 9781624062964. $19.99. F

One of only a few Westerns to win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction, this classic was first published in 1949 but is still deserving of the honor. The book continues the story begun in The Big Sky (1947) and follows the members of a wagon train on the Oregon Trail. The novel explores the sweep of the pioneer experience as Guthrie’s well-drawn characters experience love, death, beauty, and, ultimately, the redemption of the American frontier. Western audiobook fans will recognize the gritty delivery of Kevin Foley, who performs the book with typical verve. VERDICT Essential for all Western audio collections and a worthy listen for any fan of American historical fiction.—Mark John Swails, Johnson Cty. Community Coll., Overland Park, KS

hobb Audio Revews | August 2013Hobb, Robin. Blood of Dragons.(Rain Wilds Chronicles, Bk. 4). 13 CDs. library ed. unabridged. 16 hrs. Dreamscape Audio. 2013. ISBN 9781624063060. $59.99; digital download. F

In this series conclusion (after City of Dragons), the young dragon keepers have colonized the ancient city of Kelsingra and struggle to survive and keep their fledgling dragons alive. They must locate and excavate the wells of mythical “silver” that their dragons require and protect themselves from the pirates who hunt dragons for their magical blood. Meanwhile, the ancient dragon Tintaglia, wounded and separated from the colony, carries the hope for survival of the next generation of dragons as well as the cure for a dying child born to the dragon keepers. Reader Anne Flosnik deftly performs the large array of human and dragon voices. VERDICT Fans of the series will want to hear the conclusion; recommended for fans of dramatic high fantasy. [“Hobb excels at telling big stories and juggling multiple story arcs. Fans of the author and of this series who eagerly await this installment will not be disappointed,” read the starred review of the New York Times best-selling Harper Voyager hc, LJ 1/13.—Ed.]—Jason Puckett, Georgia State Univ., Atlanta

OrangeReviewStar Audio Revews | August 2013Rindell, Suzanne. The Other Typist.8 CDs. retail ed. unabridged. 10 hrs. Penguin Audio. 2013. ISBN 9781611761740. $39.95; digital download. F

In this crisp psychological thriller, debut novelist Rindell transports listeners to 1920s New York City during the height of Prohibition. Rose, a stenographer at a Lower East Side police department, excels at her job, taking great pride in her typing skills and work ethic. The conservative, somewhat prudish Rose, who was raised at a Catholic orphanage, becomes fascinated with the new typist, the glamorous Odalie, a charismatic woman with stylish clothes and bobbed hair who would have been right at home at one of Gatsby’s parties. As Rose and Odalie strike up a friendship and venture into the dangerous underworld of the speakeasies, Rose struggles to reconcile her job with her new social life. Gretchen Mol, who appears on HBO’s 1920s-set seriesBoardwalk Empire, delivers the perfect pacing and tone for this menacing thriller. VERDICT Highly recommended for all suspense fans. [“Fans of Patricia Highsmith’sThe Talented Mr. Ripley are sure to love Rindell’s debut novel, which parallels Ripley in its examination of our fascination with wealth and the potential consequences of keeping the wrong company,” read the review of the Putnam hc,LJ Xpress Reviews, 5/3/13.—Ed.] —Beth Farrell, Cleveland State Univ.
