OrangeReviewStar Audio Reviews | July 2013 Benjamin, Melanie. The Aviator’s Wife. 13 CDs. library ed. unabridged. 16½ hrs. Books on Tape. 2013. ISBN 9780365360357. $50; digital download. F

Anne Morrow Lindbergh thought her life would follow the appropriate trajectory for the the daughter of an ambassador in the 1920s: she would graduate from college after studying classical literature and marry into an appropriately wealthy family. But “Lucky Lindy,” Charles Lindbergh, the first man to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, saw a fellow adventurer in Anne. After a brief courtship they began a married life of flying and exploring. Regrettably, their fame attracted the kind of attention that led to the kidnapping and death of their firstborn son. Anne had many achievements in her own right and her book, Gift from the Sea, has become a classic. Narrator Lorna Raver provides excellent transition from Anne’s educated East Coast voice to Charles’s earnest, reedy Midwestern tones. VERDICT A highly recommended fictionalized biography that will inspire listeners to explore further Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s fascinating and challenging life. [“Well researched and paced, this novel will certainly spark readers’ interest in learning more about this famous couple,” read the review of the New York Times best-selling Delacorte hc, LJ 12/12.Ed.]—J. worldwarz Audio Reviews | July 2013OrangeReviewStar Audio Reviews | July 2013 Brooks, Max. World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War; The Complete Edition. 10 CDs. library ed. abridged. 12 hrs. Books on Tape. 2013. ISBN 9780449807897. $40; Playaway digital; digital download. F

This new edition of Brooks’s (The Zombie Survival Guide) 2007 release adds new material to the earlier, Audie Award–winning version. The narrative is told as a series of interviews with a number of individual characters (each played by a different reader) whose perspectives explore a worldwide zombie pandemic from outbreak to aftermath. The idea of zombies is used here as a springboard for examining many aspects of modern life, from domesticity to international relations, in a thoughtful and often darkly comical way.VERDICT The production is excellent, and each member of the all-star cast brings out the nuances of the text. The addition of five hours to the previous edition is an incentive for libraries that already own the earlier work to pick this one up. This recording is highly recommended for libraries where patrons have a strong interest in horror and sf or with strong circulations of The Walking Dead. [“This infectious and compelling book will have nervous readers watching the streets for zombies,” read the review of the New York Timesbest-selling Crown hc, LJ 10/1/06. OrangeReviewStar Audio Reviews | July 2013 Messud, Claire. The Woman Upstairs. 9 CDs. library ed. unabridged. 11 hrs. Books on Tape. 2013. ISBN 9780307913623. $40; digital download. F

Messud (The Emperor’s Children) returns with another intimate and piercing novel. Nora Eldridge, an elementary schoolteacher, once dreamed of being an artist but put aside her own dreams and ambitions to care for others. Her life takes an unexpected turn when the cosmopolitan Shahid family moves in from Paris. Nora is fiercely drawn to their son, a student in her class; his mother, an accomplished artist; and his dashing father, about whom she can’t help fantasizing. Nora tries to get as involved in their lives as she can, until she ultimately realizes the cost of living vicariously through others. Cassandra Campbell does a beautiful job of narrating Nora’s inner struggles. The listener easily gets lost in the beauty of her voice and the conviction of her efforts. VERDICT Highly recommended for fans of literary fiction and taut drama. [“This quietly, tensely unfolding story is related in retrospect, so we know from the start that it has ended badly for Nora. The only question is how. Remarkably, Messud…lets us experience Nora’s betrayal as if it were our own, and what finally happens really is a punch in the stomach,” read the review of the Knopf hc, LJ Xpress Reviews, 4/26/13.—Ed.]—Erin Cataldi, Franklin Coll., IN
