OrangeReviewStar Audio Reviews | May 15, 2013 Moreno, Rita. Rita Moreno. 8 CDs. retail ed. unabridged. 9½ hrs. Penguin Audio. 2013. ISBN 9781611761399. $29.95. MEMOIR

One of a handful of performers to have achieved EGOT status (by having won Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards), Moreno here presents a story that evolves from her hardships as a young Puerto Rican woman in New York in the 1930s to her struggle for fulfilling roles in the Hollywood of the 1950s and finally to success, as well as a happy marriage and motherhood. Moreno describes her frustrations with roles as a “general ethnic” early in her career, the sexism of Eisenhower’s America, her sometimes tempestuous romances with Marlon Brando, Dennis Hopper, Elvis Presley, and critic Kenneth Tynan, and brief but insightful portraits of many of the luminaries with whom she has worked, such as choreographer-director Jerome Robbins. Moreno provides a dramatic, heartfelt reading, underscoring the pathos and joys of her highs and lows. VERDICT Highly recommended for all collections, especially those concerned with immigrant experiences and women’s studies. beautruins Audio Reviews | May 15, 2013OrangeReviewStar Audio Reviews | May 15, 2013 Walter, Jess. Beautiful Ruins. 10 CDs. retail ed. unabridged. 13 hrs. Harper Audio. 2012. ISBN 9780062268365. $19.99; 11 CDs. library ed.; digital download. F

An elderly Italian man searches for the American actress he saw 50 years earlier during the filming of the movie Cleopatra. Walter (The Financial Lives of the Poets) portrays an incredibly complex chronicle of contemporary American life in a global world in this descriptive novel of love, hope, greed, careers, and life. Edoardo Ballerini’s (2012 Audie Award, The Land of Laughs) ease with the Italian language and his ability to mimic the speech of Americans uncomfortable with the tongue add to the ambiance and credibility while also pulling listeners into the story. Ballerini’s calm, quiet tone and realistic yet varied male and teen voices allow listeners to discriminate easily among characters. VERDICT Highly recommended. [“The pop culture references and wistful tone will please Nick Hornby fans and build Walter’s following. Not to be missed,” read the review of the Harper hc, LJ 4/1/13.—Ed.]—Laurie Selwyn, formerly with Grayson Cty. Law Lib., Sherman, TX

Gore, Al. The Future: Six Drivers of Global Change. 15 CDs. retail ed. unabridged. 19 hrs. Random Audio. 2013. ISBN 9780449015469. $50; 15 CDs. library ed.; Playaway digital; digital download. SOC SCI

Here are Gore’s (An Inconvenient Truth) latest attempts to identify and explain those factors shaping the world in the early 21st century. He opens with discussion on the emergence of a fully integrated global economy, along with a global communications grid, narrating the book himself. Gore moves to the new balance of economic, social, political, and military power, which differs radically from that of the 20th century. He then considers the rapid growth in population and unsustainable natural resource consumption driven by poor, short-term decisions followed by examinations of new biological and medical materials and technologies that allow us to restructure matter. He closes by examining the new balance between human activity and its effect on the environment of the planet. Gore buttresses his arguments with a vast range of information taken from nearly all disciplines. Though the picture appearing in this story is at times bleak, the author remains optimistic that humanity will make the necessary changes to ensure Earth’s survival. VERDICT This is not an easy listen. It covers a lot of ground and assumes a level of prior knowledge on the part of the listener. In the end, though, it is worth the effort. Recommended to all listeners.—Stephen L. Hupp, West Virginia Univ. Parkersburg Lib.
