Cold Audio Reviews | May 1, 2013OrangeReviewStar Audio Reviews | May 1, 2013 McKinty, Adrian. The Cold Cold Ground. 9 CDs. library ed. unabridged. 10½ hrs. Blackstone Audio. 2013. ISBN 9781441785688. $90; 1 MP3-CD. library/retail eds.; Playaway digital; digital download. F

In this time capsule of a mystery novel, McKinty, with great skill and authenticity, transports readers to the Northern Ireland of 1981, at the height of the “troubles,” when Bobby Sands and other IRA hunger-strikers are inflaming an already violent and unstable Belfast. DS Sean Duffy is a maverick on several levels, including being a Catholic in the largely Protestant Royal Ulster Constabulary in the town of Carrickfergus, near Belfast. Duffy is trying to solve the murders of two gay men, one of whom turns out to be the head of the IRA’s internal security force. Gerard Doyle reads with an Irish accent that sounds impeccable, lending added authenticity to dialog and language. The Cold Cold Ground is reported to be the first book of a “Troubles” trilogy, so look for these great characters and this engrossing setting to continue through at least two more books. verdict Not to be missed. [“For fans of Stewart Neville’s crime novels, a new and harrowing Irish trilogy is under way. At turns violent and labyrinthine, McKinty’s fine police procedural is also the ultimate page-turner,” read the review of the Seventh Street: Prometheus hc, LJ 11/1/12.—Ed.]—Kristen L. Davis, one of the most successful record producers in history, reflects on his tremendous success in this candid and star-studded memoir. He recounts his beginnings, growing up in Brooklyn, and his relationships with his parents (he lost both when he was young) and family. He also discusses his scholarship to Harvard Law School and short-lived career in law before being hired by Columbia Records at the age of 28, where he signed such artists as Janis Joplin, Santana, and Sly and the Family Stone. He would later go on to found Arista Records, where he revived the careers of Aretha Franklin and Dionne Warwick and made his greatest discovery, Whitney Houston, as well as launching the careers of countless other recording acts. The book is excellently narrated by Dennis Boutsikaris. verdict This exhaustive and detailed biography is highly recommended for anyone interested in the music business and for music fans in general. OrangeReviewStar Audio Reviews | May 1, 2013 Stelzer, Cita. Dinner with Churchill: Policy-Making at the Dinner Table. 5 CDs. library ed. unabridged. AudioGO. 2013. ISBN 9780792797043. $64.95. HIST

Stelzer, research associate at the Hudson Institute, provides readers with an enjoyable and original look at the often overlooked “table top diplomacy” of Sir Winston Churchill. A self-described man of “plain tastes,” Churchill enjoyed excellent champagnes, wines, Cuban cigars, and first-rate food. While considered extravagant by the standards of today, the foods that Churchill enjoyed were not uncommon for those of his class during his early life. By drawing on extensive research and interviews, Stelzer leads the reader on a grand tour of some of the finest hotels, restaurants, estates, and political conferences (Yalta, Potsdam, the Savoy, the White House) with some of the most notable figures of World War II (FDR, Stalin, King George VI, Eisenhower). Narrator Davina Porter does a superb job with the accents and in conveying emotion. verdictStrongly recommended for those interested in Churchill, food, or history.—Scott R. DiMarco, Mansfield Univ. of Pennsylvania Lib.
