Schulz, Carolyn. Creative Beaded Jewelry: 33 Exquisite Designs Inspired by the Arts of China, Japan, India, and Tibet. Tuttle. 2013. 80p. illus. index. ISBN 9780804843010. pap. $14.95. CRAFTS

Veteran crafter Schulz was inspired by Asian culture, color palettes, and surface design in this collection of beaded jewelry. The projects include basic stringing on elastic cord or memory wire, as well as some simple wirework and knotting. The beads are the stars here, rather than the techniques, and sometimes the Asian influence is a bit of a stretch, but the jewelry is pretty nonetheless. Schulz suggests sources for acquiring the beads used in the projects. VERDICT The accessories in this collection are eye-catching, and the projects are very accessible to novice jewelry makers.

Leinhauser, Jean & Rita Weiss. Everything the Internet Didn’t Teach You About Crochet. Leisure Arts. 2013. 96p. illus. index. ISBN 9781464707414. pap. $9.99. FIBER CRAFTS

Leinhauser and Weiss, both crochet experts, assembled years of wisdom into this short guide, which focuses on the basics of crochet, clearly presented for beginners. While most crochet guides focus on stitches, this one instead emphasizes supplies, tools, and pattern reading, with the stitches relegated to a brief “refresher course” section. Three very simple projects—a face cloth, a dishcloth, and a scarf—are included. In addition to this book, the authors have also published a companion guide focusing on knitting basics. VERDICT This pocket-size book covers the essentials and is suitable for novices who know how to crochet but lack more detailed knowledge of tools and techniques.

100 Crafts & DIY Reviews | June 1, 2013OrangeReviewStar Crafts & DIY Reviews | June 1, 2013 Pink, Tula. Tula Pink’s City Sampler: 100 Modern Quilt Blocks. David & Charles. 2013. 256p. illus. index. ISBN 9781440232145. pap. $27.99. FIBER CRAFTS

Sampler quilts, like the Farmer’s Wife or Dear Jane quilt, are a staple of traditional quilt-making. Best known for her fanciful fabric designs, Pink puts a modern spin on this old-school format with this collection of six-inch blocks, all designed and sewn in her vibrant fabrics. Each block design includes a close-up photograph of the finished block, along with cutting directions and a piecing diagram. This format will be familiar to quilters who have made sampler quilts before. The directions are in diagram form, so some basic knowledge of patchwork piecing is required. Five full-size quilts incorporating all or most of the blocks in the collection are provided. VERDICT Pink is a big name in modern quilting, and sampler quilts are surprisingly popular among quilters of all tastes. This one should be a hit.
