Tantorious is a semi-monthly podcast series featuring interviews with well-known authors, hosted by Allan Hoving and presented by Tantor Audio.

Bestselling author Jonny Bowden is a nationally recognized expert on weight loss, nutrition, and health. He is a board-certified nutritionist with a master’s degree in psychology. His new book, The Great Cholesterol Myth: Why Lowering Your Cholesterol Won’t Prevent Heart Disease – And the Statin-Free Plan That Will, written with Dr. Stephen Sinatra, reveals the real culprits of the disease and gives listeners expert advice for effectively preventing, managing, and reversing heart disease.
Excerpts from the audio interview:
Q: What’s the great myth about cholesterol? Isn’t it the chief culprit in heart disease?
A: I realize that what I’m about to say is going to sound like complete heresy, but we’ve gotten on the wrong track as far as preventing heart disease. Trying to lower heart disease by lowering cholesterol is like trying to lower your calories by taking the lettuce off your plate. Cholesterol is easy to control, but it doesn’t have much to do with heart disease.
Q: So what are the real causes of heart disease?
A: The real promoters of heart disease are inflammation, oxidative damage, stress, and sugar in the diet. We need to manage our stress: get rid of toxic food, toxic environments, toxic relationships. There are natural anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant foods we can eat. And the number one dietary factor in heart disease isn’t fat – it’s sugar.
