Acoustiklogo Audio News | February 1, 2013Baker & Taylor (B&T) has announced the launch of Acoustik, a mobile platform “that allows consumers to buy and download digital audiobooks on their Apple and Android devices” using a free app powered by Findaway World, LLC. While Acoustik, which currently provides consumers access to nearly 40,000 titles from a variety of publishers, is available at select retailers, B&T will be expanding the service into libraries in 2013 as part of the Axis 360 digital media platform. “We [were] aiming for late January,” B&T’s Kimberly Kuo told LJ. Acoustik is available for download at no charge on iPhones and iPads through Apple’s App Store and on Android devices through Google Play.“The release of Acoustik is an important milestone in giving consumers, retailers, and publishers more choices in the delivery of audio content,” said David Cully, president of B&T Retail Markets. “Digital audio is growing rapidly. Developed by one of the leaders in audio content, this platform, along with the strong partnerships Baker & Taylor has forged, will allow more great content to be available at the fingertips of consumers, who are very eager for it,” Cully said.The Audio Publishers Association applauded the move. “The members of the Audio Publishers Association continue to be excited and encouraged by the new developments in consumer options which will undoubtedly help us to grow,” Michele Cobb, the group’s president, told LJ. “We are glad to see the recognition for the importance of the format as we consistently publish more titles to meet the interests of listeners and potential listeners,” she added.
