AudioGo will be marketing the ebook and audiobook editions of Kathleen Sharp’s update to her 2004 biography of Hollywood power couple Lew and Edie Wasserman, who operated both the MCA talent agency and Universal Studios. In Mr. and Mrs. Hollywood: Edie and Lew Wasserman and Their Entertainment Empire, journalist Sharp, who covered the movies/TV for the Boston Globe, asserts that the Wasserman’s power and influence extended beyond the entertainment industry into local politics on up to the U.S. Senate, and even the White House.
Lew Wasserman “was a silent boss to 62 labor unions, a back-door diplomat among squabbling egos, a political kingmaker, and cultural statesman,” said AudioGO, while Edie was the “daughter of a Cleveland mob attorney, the queen of Hollywood’s social A-list, and Lew’s secret agent, who used her cunning and charm to advance their cause.” Along with their power plays and mega-million deals, the couple also donated fortunes to charities.
At LJ’s request, Tara Gelsomino, AudioGO’s executive marketing manager, probed Sharp on the changes and new material: “I updated the Wasserman biography to give more historical perspective, and I streamlined the contents to emphasize the key aspects in the Edie-and-Lew partnership,” Sharp replied. “It’s the same in-depth study of this extraordinary couple, incorporating 450 star interviews—only now it’s ready for the Wifi/Facebook/ADD age.” The audiobook will be released in July.
