In Greaves’s entertaining first novel, Jack MacTaggert, a young lawyer in a prestigious Pasadena law firm, is thrown into the middle of murder and intrigue when he is assigned an insurance claim from a wealthy woman whose prize racehorse, Hush Puppy, has died under suspicious circumstances. After his friend and mentor is killed while investigating what appears to be corruption inside the firm, MacTaggert and his girlfriend find their lives threatened as he tries to identify the killer and discover what happened to the horse. Jack is a likable hero with a wisecrack for every occasion, and the plot moves along briskly to a satisfying conclusion. Dan Butler’s smooth and effective reading makes for an enjoyable listening experience. VERDICT Recommended for fans of crime fiction and legal novels. [“Winner of the South West Writers (SWW) grand-prize Storyteller Award for 2010, trial lawyer Greaves’s delightful debut, which the SWW also named Best Mystery of 2010, cleverly intermingles equestrian show jumping, insurance claims, and high-tech science in this sunny California thriller,” read the review of the Minotaur: St. Martin’s hc, LJ 4/1/12.—Ed.]—Mary Knapp, Madison P.L., WI

The Passage of Power: The Years of Lyndon Johnson. 27 CDs. library ed. unabridged. 33 hrs. Brilliance Audio. 2012. To erect a fourth tier in his literary monument to Johnson, Caro chisels ambiguities from 1958 to 1964, especially the transition between Kennedy’s assassination and LBJ becoming President. This chunk of recent history reveals veins flecked with characters and events that gripped the nation: the Bay of Pigs invasion; the Cuban Missile Crisis; the Civil Rights Act of 1964; charismatic JFK plus wife Jacqueline and U.S. Attorney General brother Bobby; lethal gunshots; and a long weekend of funeral ceremonies. Reader Grover Gardner relays history with a newscaster’s gravity but can also deliver an LBJ quote with a fluent Texas cadence. VERDICT U.S. history buffs, Caro fans, and admirers of accomplished writing will find it absorbing. The savvy listener may want concurrently to borrow the book, since it is enhanced with 32 pages of photographs missing from the audio. [“Caro has once more combined prodigious research and a literary gift to mount a stage for his Shakespearean figures…. Readers’ only disappointment will be the necessary wait for Caro’s next volume,” read the review of the Knopf hc, LJ 5/1/12.—Ed.]—Judith Robinson, Dept. of Lib. & Information Studies, Univ. at Buffalo

code Audiobook Reviews | October 1, 2012OrangeReviewStar Audiobook Reviews | October 1, 2012Nez, Chester & Judith Schiess Avila. Code Talker: The First and Only Memoir by One of the Original Navajo Code Talkers of WWII. 8 CDs. library ed. unabridged. 10 hrs. Tantor Audio. 2012. ISBN 9781452634982. $83.99; 8 CDs. retail ed.; 1 MP3-CD. library/retail eds.; Playaway digital; digital download. MEMOIR/HIST

The Navajo author led a remarkable life. New Mexico was not kind to the Nez family, which struggled to earn a living from the land while doing without modern conveniences like electricity. Despite the hardships, Nez recounts the joy of a life lived in harmony with nature. After very difficult school years, Nez joined the U.S. military during World War II. He eventually became a Code Talker, one of the Navajo men tasked with creating a secret military language that the enemy couldn’t decipher. The code Nez helped to develop proved instrumental in ensuring victory over the Japanese. David Colacci, past winner of the AudioFile Earphones Award, does admirable work voicing Nez and all the moments of surprise and wonder as he navigates American culture while guided by traditional Navajo sensibilities. VERDICT This compelling story will be of interest to World War II fans as well as enthusiasts of Native American history and culture. [“Accessible and compelling, this is recommended for general readers as well as World War II history buffs,” read the review of the Berkeley Caliber: Penguin hc, LJ 10/1/12.—Ed.]—Denis Frias, Mississauga Lib. Syst., Ont.
