Sadly, we must note the passing of Michael Clarke Duncan (1957–2012), an actor whose imposing presence and sonorous voice made him an unforgettable member of any cast. Although his film and TV credentials are numerous, many of his standout roles were in films that fell into the categories of sf, fantasy, and horror. His performance as John Coffey in The Green Mile (1999), based on Stephen King’s novel, earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. He also appeared in the sf blockbuster Armageddon (1998); the 2001 remake of Planet of the Apes; the fantasy action movie The Scorpion King (2002);
the 2003 superhero film Daredevil; Sin City (2005), based on Frank Miller’s noir graphic novel; the sf thriller The Island (2005); and the sf family film The Last Mimzy (2007). He was 54.
