Bad news, guys, it is with great sadness that I report the death of Golden Age comics’ legend
Joe Kubert, who passed away at age 85. Along with his commercial work, Kubert and sons Andy and Adam ran the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art in Dover, NJ. Kubert, who spent most of his career at DC Comics, was one of the creators of Sgt. Rock while also working on Hawkman other classic characters.
Born in Poland in 1926, Kubert’s family immigrated to Brooklyn, NY, where Joe was raised. Unbelievably, he began working professionally at age 12 and continued to work up until the time of his death; he and Andy recently provided the art for DC’s Before Watchmen: Nite Owl, which was released in June.
There are less and less of these Golden Age guys left every year. Thanks to San Diego, New York, and numerous other cons across the country, these writers and artists who brought joy of countless fans for decades at least got to receive the accolades they deserved.
