On a sad note beloved children’s author/illustrator‚ and for many the epitome of fantasy illustration‚ \Maurice Sendak died on May 8 after a stroke. He was 83. Sendak’s Brooklyn childhood was marked by the Depression, the loss of some family members to the Holocaust, and recurring childhood illnesses that required bedrest. His rich illustrations for children’s books (actually loved by many adults) such as Where the Wild Things Are and In the Night Kitchen not only brought a new awareness of children’s inner lives to juvenile literature but also came to represent humanity’s ability to see the magical and the wondrous in the world that surrounds us. Many current sf and fantasy authors grew up on his magical stories and found their inspiration from his example. The child in all of us will always remember him.
