Keith Richards: Rocker, Stoner…Book Lover?

Ages ago I wrote a book news story about Keith Richards penning his autobiography. Since then it’s become public knowledge that the aging Rolling Stones axe man, who to me always seemed to take the “sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll” thing way too seriously, actually is quite a bookish fellow. He has a large private library, which he opens to friends, and is a serious reader. Whodathunkit!

Part of the PR tour for his autobiography, Life, will be a stop at good ol’ New York Public Library on October 29. Rapper Jay-Z also will discuss his own memoir, Decoded, on November 15. So you don’t think that NYPL is slumming it, Toni Morrison and W.S. Merwin also will be speaking there.

Keith, I never would have pegged you for a book lover (since you look like the walking dead); I salute you, sir, and shopped this for you.

    That is hilarious, Mike.

  2. Karl Helicher says:

With books on zombies and historical and literary vampyre hunters, one of the “walking dead” like Keith Richards is a natural (or supernatural) bibliophile. Mr Richards is impervious to slurs about his less than graceful aging because he “can’t get no desecration.”

  3. Jane Law says:

Perhaps you should not have judged a book by its cover. Anyone who knows anything about Keith knows he’s a bibliophile. As far as “less than graceful aging” goes, Karl, you will be retired at 65, whereas Mr. Richards will still be contributing to the world of music until the end.

    Hi Michael,

LJ sent me a rather lavish and important mongraph on the works of the architect Vignoli. I’d love to review it. But something doesn’t seem right….LJ hasn’t sent me anything for a long, long time.

In years past, I had always been a happy LJ reviewer; but when the books stop, I didn’t feel a need to ask why. It’s been a long time, I just thought our relationship was at an end.

Please, if I may ask, why was this book sent my way? And maybe it was a mistake?

Any advice will be most appreciated.

    David

  12. Throughout this grand scheme of things you actually receive an A for hard work. Exactly where you lost everybody was on your specifics. You know, as the maxim goes, the devil is in the details… And it could not be more true at this point. Having said that, allow me tell you what exactly did do the job. Your writing can be incredibly engaging and that is probably the reason why I am taking an effort to opine. I do not really make it a regular habit of doing that. 2nd, while I can easily notice a leaps in reason you come up with, I am not necessarily convinced of exactly how you appear to unite your ideas which in turn produce your conclusion. For the moment I will, no doubt yield to your point but trust in the foreseeable future you actually connect the facts better.
